An F-16 fighter jet positioned itself directly in front of a civilian aircraft at approximately 12:20 p.m. ET on Saturday, forcing the pilot to exit restricted airspace near Palm Beach, Florida. U.S. military officials identified the tactic as a headbutt maneuver, a standard procedure used by the North American Aerospace Defense Command to gain a pilot's attention and establish visual contact.
The interception occurred near President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. The civilian plane had entered a Temporary Flight Restriction zone established over the area. NORAD stated that after the fighter jet moved into the pilot's line of sight, the two aircraft established communication. The civilian pilot then steered the plane safely out of the restricted zone in compliance with federal flight instructions.
Military officials noted that the pilot may face federal authorities upon landing and could be subject to enforcement action for violating the restriction. The Federal Aviation Administration issues these temporary restrictions for various reasons, including major sporting events, severe weather, and political gatherings attended by high-profile figures. Pilots receive updates on such restrictions through Notices to Airmen, which the agency encourages them to monitor regularly.
President Trump was in West Palm Beach that day to cast an early ballot for the upcoming midterm elections. He and First Lady Melania Trump visited a local polling station in the afternoon. When asked if he voted along party lines, Trump replied, "Very much so." Following his vote, he traveled to Georgia for a campaign rally.
The incident is the third such interception reported in recent weeks linked to the president's campaign appearances. Earlier this month, NORAD announced that F-16s intercepted a plane entering restricted airspace over Clemson, South Carolina, where Trump supported Darline Graham's Senate campaign. Days before that, the command reported a similar incident over Cincinnati, Ohio, during another presidential visit.
The headbutt maneuver involves a fighter jet flying close in front of a target aircraft to signal for it to change course or establish contact. NORAD described the Saturday incident as routine, noting the safe exit of the civilian plane. The temporary flight restriction over the Mar-a-Lago area remains a common occurrence during periods of heightened security for the president.
