Michelle Hooper is departing Searchlight Pictures, where she served as executive vice president of marketing. Her tenure at the studio spanned 20 years, beginning in 2006. During that period, her oversight of publicity, awards, and creative marketing contributed to a total of 200 Oscar nominations for the company. Searchlight converted those nominations into 49 wins.

Among the most notable victories under her leadership were best picture awards for Nomadland, The Shape of Water, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, and Slumdog Millionaire. The studio also secured best picture nominations at the Golden Globes for those same films, alongside 15 others. In total, her work helped the studio accumulate more than 130 Golden Globe nominations.

A longtime colleague described Hooper as a leader who could identify a film's place in the current cultural moment. The colleague noted that Hooper used real-time feedback to close out marketing campaigns effectively. The departure is viewed as a loss for the studio, though the colleague predicted it would benefit her next employer.

Before joining Searchlight, Hooper held leadership roles at major broadcast networks. At CBS Entertainment, she served as director of entertainment communications and helped shape the publicity strategy for Survivor. She also spent four years as vice president of entertainment publicity at Fox Broadcast. In that capacity, she managed campaigns for television series such as The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and American Idol.

Hooper was included in a 2025 report recognizing the impact of women in the industry. The report highlighted her work alongside Searchlight executives Rebecca Kearey, DanTram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson. Their collective efforts led to 10 Academy Award nominations for the films A Complete Unknown and A Real Pain. Kieran Culkin won a best supporting actor award for his role in the latter production.

In a joint statement, the Searchlight team explained that the studio relies on adventurous film choices and strong relationships with filmmakers. They stated that this approach allows the company to remain stable by trusting that audiences desire films that entertain, challenge, and provoke.

This awards season, Hooper was directing the marketing campaigns for Wild Horse Nine and Behemonth!. The studio has not yet announced a successor to her position.
